The International Symposium on Archaeometry (ISA) is a week-long conference that's held biennially. It's the big conference for archaeologists who use scientific techniques to generate data on archaeological sites, objects or issues. This year it was in Leuven, Belgium, and I was extremely pleased to win funding from the UCL Graduate School and the Institute… Continue reading International Symposium on Archaeometry 2012, Leuven Belgium

ISA 2012 Leuven (Day 3 – Biomaterials and Bioarchaeology)
I’m currently at the 39th International Symposium on Archaeometry in Leuven, Belgium, where I have a poster to present. I’ll be writing a proper conference review when I return, but in the mean time I’ll be making informal collections of the tweets and discussing the conference here on a daily basis. There are also collections… Continue reading ISA 2012 Leuven (Day 3 – Biomaterials and Bioarchaeology)

pXRF standards analysis
Just wanted to share this image, as I am feeling quite so pleased with it: It illustrates the results from some certified standard materials I analysed on the portable XRF machine yesterday afternoon. Certified standards are materials whose exact composition has been tested and agreed on by multiple laboratories, often the best international ones. We… Continue reading pXRF standards analysis
ISA 2010 Photographs
38th International Symposium of Archaeometry, Tampa, Florida. I've been keeping my camera handy during presentations, poster sessions and trips out. The photographs can be found here, in one of my Picassa albums. Copyright is mine, and the photos are small - if you'd like a better copy of one of them let me know.
Posters for ISA2010 – opinions sought!
I was going to wait for my supervisor to get back to me before I posted up the drafts of my posters. However I'm a little stalled on the second one, and would like some feedback on the first, so here it is! Poster 84 - Returning meaning to metal-detected objects Please bear in mind… Continue reading Posters for ISA2010 – opinions sought!
HMS Annual conference 2010
On Thursday and Friday, 2-3rd of September, the Historical Metallurgy Society is holding its annual conference, entitled 'Accidental and Experimental Archaeometallurgy'. The venue is West Dean College, near Chichester in West Sussex, which is incidentally where UCL IoA holds its undergrad 'PrimTech' two week outing every year, so they're used to crazy archaeologists turning up… Continue reading HMS Annual conference 2010
Iron ore reduction in a bloomery furnace – part 1
At the moment I'm trying to produce the first draft of my literature review. This involves reading a lot of rather dull and repetitive articles, as well as wading through the kilos of paper I have photocopied in the last six months because I thought it looked 'useful'. Hmm. Probably should have read those as… Continue reading Iron ore reduction in a bloomery furnace – part 1
